Essentials of Critical Care Medicine
Essentials of Critical Care Medicine: Critical Care is a fairly modern specialty that gain prominence only recently. In fact, the first fellowship in critical care was establish as recently as 1962 at the University of Pittsburgh. Many surgical specialties which require critical care develope much before the development of Critical Care as a subspecialty. All the patients in these units were manage by the admitting physicians (Open ICUs). Of late, the concept of Closed ICUs which are head by critical care specialists is now fast becoming the standard of care. However, there is an acute shortage of qualifies personnel to take care of the units in a developing country like India where the requirement fast outpaces the output by institutes where rigorous training is possible. As a result, most of the units are head by Critical Care Specialists who are helped by physicians who are not rigorously train in the skills and knowledge but rather learn with experience. Inputs are also given by admitting physicians and surgeons.
